The most valuable tool you have for training your dog

Some of you may think that it is a packet of treats, or your lead, or a toy but your most valuable tool is with you at all times. It is there for you to use 24 hours a day and you never have to look for it. That tool is YOUR VOICE..

To build a good relationship of understanding you need 3 definite and different tones:-

CommandThis should be a general tone, a normal speaking voice, there is no need to shout, just ask your dog to comply. If you have trained your dog then they will understand exactly what you are asking. If your training is lacking then this is something you need to work on.

Praise This is the fun, exciting tone that should make your dog look at you and wag its tail. Your praise should be used during your training, when you are using your treats as reinforcement and encouragement for a job well done. When you praise your dog, smile and show them you are pleased and they got it right.

Reprimand This is the one that contains the negative. If they get it wrong, misbehave then you need to let your dog know. This should be a short, sharp tone, not a diatribe about how they have let you down, how they are naughty and because of this they won't get their chew tonight.

Getting these tones right, using them at the right time and making sure your dog knows exactly what is expected of them and when is the only way to have a happy, well mannered, well behaved dog.

In a dogs world things are black and white, right and wrong. There is no understanding of negotiation and no concept of reason. They get it wrong, they get into trouble. Make your dogs life easy by being sure what you want and letting them know when they get it right.
